As the sun blazes overhead, India braces itself for another scorching summer. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm: this season is set to bring more heat wave days that usual between April and June. With temperatures predicted to climb higher than usual, it’s essential to take one step ahead and protect us from the harsh effects of the upcoming heat waves. To know how to stay safe and sane in this summer heat, here are few tips by Dr. Saumya Shatakshi, Senior Wellness Consultant at Healthians that you can abide by.

TIPS TO STAY COOL AND SANE AMID HEATWAVE

  1. Hydration is Key: Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated soft drinks as they may lead to the loss of more body fluids. Similarly, steer clear of high-protein and stale foods. Instead, drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty. High humidity can impede your body’s ability to release internal heat, so ensure you’re properly hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.
  2. Examine your hydration: Monitor your urine color to indicate your water intake; pale yellow or transparent urine is ideal, while amber or dark yellow urine signals low hydration.
  3. Dress Appropriately: Choose breathable and light-color fabric clothes to help maintain body temperature. Avoid tight clothing, as it can make you feel suffocated and uncomfortable. Proper attire can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related issues.
  4. Smart Cooling Practices: After coming indoors, avoid having chilled refrigerated water. Instead, opt for earthen pot water. Drinking chilled water right after staying in the heat for longer can cause a sudden imbalance in body temperature, which can be harmful. Earthen pot water provides apt coolness that refreshes and hydrates your body safely.
  5. Shelter and Protection: Stay in shaded areas when outside to avoid direct sun exposure on your head. Use umbrellas, hats, or wet clothes on your head to protect yourself from heat. This will help prevent heat-related illnesses.
  6. Nutrition and Replenishment: Sweating leads to the loss of nutrients and minerals. Replenish these with coconut water, lemonade, refreshing fruit juices, and electrolyte-rich foods and beverages. Always have ORS (Oral Rehydration Solutions) at home. If ORS is unavailable, a homemade pink salt and sugar solution can help when feeling dizzy or dehydrated.

With the help of the tips above, you can definitely prevent the worst effects of the heat effectively and stay safe during extreme summer temperatures. Though prevention is the key, connect with medical professionals whenever required.
