Chinese New Year is a time for the rekindling of family bonds. If you are staying in Hong Kong for the holiday, which begins on February 10, you should start thinking about where to hold some of those gatherings.

1 Man Ho

Experience authentic Cantonese cuisine at Man Ho Chinese Restaurant. Its Chinese New Year à la carte menu features dishes such as abalone yu sheng (HK$888) for prosperity, braised dried oysters with black moss (HK$688) for wealth, sautéed tiger garoupa fillets (HK$788) for auspiciousness, and braised bamboo pith rolled with sliced abalone (HK$388 per person) for luck.

For smaller parties, it offers a “Lunar New Year Festive Menu” for HK$1,280 per person with eight courses, including dishes such as lobster with salted fish sauce, and braised abalone with goose web.

Sha Tin 18 has a variety of à la carte Chinese New Year dishes, including braised abalone wedge with dried milkfish, arrowhead, and oyster sauce (HK$888) for prosperity. 4 Duddell’s

For Chinese New Year, Duddell’s offers a choice between its six-course Deluxe Set Menu (HK$1,188) and an opulent eight-course Premium Set Menu (HK$1,888), featuring dishes such as sautéed lobster with black bean sauce and broccoli, and braised pork knuckle with semi-dried oyster and dried black moss. This menu includes a complimentary glass of Saicho jasmine-flavoured sparkling tea for balance.

Both menus are available from February 1 to 25.

5 The Chinese Library

The Chinese Library in Tai Kwun is serving an eight-course Lunar New Year Dinner (HK$1,188). Delight in pan-fried oyster with honey and scallions, followed by sea cucumber and fish maw soup with dragon claw fungus, and braised abalone puff with pan-seared turnip cake, symbolising good fortune for the Year of the Dragon. Available from February 9 to 24.

6 China Tang

China Tang’s Chinese New Year à la carte menu includes an HK$888 serving of lo hei featuring abalone slices, scallops, crabmeat, and prawns.

Menu highlights include Sichuan-style roasted lobster with assorted onion (HK$1,288) and deep-fried mud carp stuffed with Buddha Jumps Over the Wall (HK$288 per person), a classic casserole dish.

7 Hutong

Bring the family on February 12 to watch the Chinese New Year fireworks and have a Fireworks Dinner. The six-course menu features dishes such as Angus beef tenderloin fried rice, and costs HK$1,888 per person.

For an indulgent start to the holiday weekend, the Feng Wei Brunch (HK$698 per person) includes fai chun calligraphy and face-changing shows on February 10 and 11.

8 Tao Li

Tao Li’s Chinese New Year menu, available from February 10 to 24, features auspicious dim sum and premium ingredients symbolising luck, happiness, and good fortune. Among them are lo hei (HK$798), sea moss soup (HK$418), and sautéed fresh abalone with home-made XO chilli sauce (HK$538).

The holiday dim sum menu, available for lunch from February 10 to 16, includes items such as whole conpoy soup dumpling (HK$178) and steamed shrimp dumplings with asparagus and gold leaf (HK$106).

For something a little different or for those of who like to sleep in during the holiday, the Lobby Lounge’s Lunar New Year Afternoon Tea Buffet is an option. Expect dishes such as crispy crab claw fillet with shrimp paste, pan-fried turnip pudding with pork, and a salmon lo hei. Dessert options include Hong Kong milk tea panna cotta, and black sesame cheesecake.

Available from February 10 to 13, at HK$438 per adult and HK$228 per child.

10 Essence

Essence at the Novotel in Citygate, Lantau, is also serving a Chinese New Year buffet (February 9 to 14). Dishes include steamed fresh abalone, and stir-fried king prawn with salted egg yolk sauce to signify abundance. Order the lo hei, here called Yu Sheng Salad, for good luck and prosperity, and remember to have some braised moss and dried oysters in oyster sauce for good fortune.

A buffet lunch is HK$296 per person, and a dinner buffet HK$464.
