2024 Lucid Air Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview

The sheer amount of engineering needed to design the 2024 Lucid Air is staggering on its own. Name another electric car that can jump to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds and then glide over 400 miles before needing to be recharged. Even high-dollar rivals such as the Porsche Taycan, the Mercedes-AMG EQS53, and the Tesla Model S can do only one of those things. The new Air Sapphire performance model is even quicker, with a claimed 60-mph time of under 2.0 seconds. Lucid achieves these heroic feats with clever tech, a novel battery design, and power-dense electric motors that benefit from the company’s experience in Formula E racing. On top of all that, the Air wears a designer look and has a premium cabin that’s spacious for four adults, event when traveling long distances. The sedan’s nearly six-figure starting price leaves us wanting a bit more in terms of interior luxury, but the Air’s cabin is stylish and upscale, nonetheless. Like other startup automakers, in-car tech is still a moving target, but the Air’s three-screen dashboard promises to improve over time by way of over-the-air updates, pushed from the brand’s Silicon Valley HQ directly to the car’s complex circuitry.

What’s New for 2024?

As if the Air needed more power, Lucid has launched the high-performance Sapphire trim for 2024, complete with three electric motors pumping out a combined 1234 horsepower. To go along with the Sapphire’s mega-power powertrain, Lucid has retuned the suspension, tweaked the traction-control system, installed carbon-ceramic brake rotors, and swapped in unique wheels with extra-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Grand Touring AWD

Sapphire AWD

We’d steer towards the Touring model. It offers plenty to like and costs significantly less than the Grand Touring trim. The Touring offers 20-inch wheels, leather upholstery, in-dash navigation, and 425 miles of estimated driving range per charge. All Lucid models come standard with three years of complimentary charging via the Electrify America charging network. The fanciest Dream Edition models are officially sold out, but if you want to maximize your luxury—and your out-of-pocket cost—the Grand Touring trim offers much of the Dream’s panache.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The entry-level Air Pure features a single electric motor driving the rear wheels and produces 480 horsepower. Other models have dual electric motors that provide all-wheel drive and a variety of horsepower ratings: The Touring model generates 620 horses, and the Grand Touring makes 1050. We’ve sampled the Grand Touring and Grand Touring Performance trims, and the former delivered a brisk 3.0-second 60-mph time, a feat that’s easily repeated by using the car’s launch mode. The lower-priced and lower-powered Touring model ran to 60 mph in an identical 3.0 seconds; the Pure did the deed in 3.5 seconds. The Pure and Touring models’ power deficit is more noticeable on the way to 130 mph, which the Touring managed to dispatch in 12.0 seconds versus the Grand Touring which did it in 10.3. Despite riding on conventional steel coil springs rather than air springs, the sedan felt calm and smooth in the appropriately named Smooth drive mode. Our main complaint was with our example’s 21-inch wheels on low-profile performance tires that produced notable road noise on a section of coarse pavement. The new top dog is the 1234-horsepower Lucid Air Sapphire, which has three electric motors. The additional motor is mounted at the rear and provides insane acceleration performance to compete with the Tesla Model S Plaid. Lucid also claims a top speed of 200 mph.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The Air has the longest range of any electric vehicle currently on the market, according to EPA estimates. Grand Touring models of the Air feature a 112.0-kWh battery pack and DC fast-charging capability while the Pure and Touring trims use a smaller 92-kWh version. The base Pure has an estimated driving range of 410 miles, whereas the mid-range Touring is estimated to travel 425 miles per charge. The Grand Touring and Grand Touring Performance models offer up to 516 and 446 miles of range, respectively. On our 75-mph highway route, the Grand Touring went 410 miles, making it the longest-range EV we’ve ever tested; the Touring we tested went for just 280 miles before needing to be recharged and the Pure went on for 310 miles before the battery depleted. Plugged into a fast charger, the sedan is said to be able to recoup 300 miles of range in 21 minutes. New owners will also enjoy three years of free fast charging at Electrify America charging stations. There’s no cap on how many times owners can charge their cars, as long as it’s used for personal and not commercial purposes.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The most efficient Air is rated at 131 MPGe combined, and the Performance version is rated at 111 MPGe combined. During our test drive of a Grand Touring model, however, we recorded only 82 MPGe; the Touring did better with a 107 MPGe result and the Pure gave us 101 MPGe. For more information about the Air’s efficiency, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Make no mistake, the Air is intended to be a luxury car, and its handsome interior is fitted with rich-looking materials and cutting-edge technology. Lucid is especially proud of the sedan’s expansive passenger space, which is highlighted by a large back seat. While the standard rear seating is said to be comfortable for up to three adults, there’s also an optional Executive Rear Seating option that adds a recline function for ultimate comfort. The Air’s glass roof makes it feel even airier and helps outward visibility. The sedan’s front center console looks to provide generous storage space behind the retractable lower touchscreen and inside the large center-console bin, which houses a set of cupholders as well as slots to place a smartphone. We’re also told its front trunk—or frunk—will have 10 cubic feet of volume.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Air is outfitted with a sophisticated infotainment system that incorporates a large upper touchscreen that flows out of the fully digital gauge cluster and a tablet-like lower touchscreen that handles additional functions and can be retracted into the dashboard. Lucid says the system’s voice-recognition software will respond to natural speech patterns. The interface also has an assistant that learns the user’s preferred music and climate settings. In addition to some physical controls on the steering wheel, there are a set of toggles for temperature and fan speed as well as a roller to adjust the volume of the audio system.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Air is offered with an array of driver-assistance technology and the company is working on Level 3 self-driving abilities. The latter won’t initially be available, but through the magic of over-the-air updates, it’s expected to be offered within three years. For more information about the Air’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features should include:

  • Available forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Lucid is a startup automaker with no previous products, but its warranty coverage is very similar to Tesla. Neither brand offers complimentary maintenance, though.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers eight years or 100,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance
