Kwasi Kwarteng’s Surrey seat was a relatively safe one

The 48-year-old, who represents Spelthorne in Surrey, told his constituency association this week he would not run in the next general election. The former chancellor served a short-lived tenure in the role under Liz Truss and confirmed his upcoming departure on social media.
“It has been an honour to serve the residents of Spelthorne since 2010, and I shall continue to do so for the remainder of my time in Parliament,” he wrote.
Kwarteng holds a relatively safe Conservative seat and has served as an MP for 14 years.
However, he is best remembered for the disastrous mini-budget of September 2022 that sent the British economy into meltdown under the watch of Liz Truss.
Kwarteng was sacked just 38 days after being appointed chancellor, largely taking the fall for the budget’s spectacular shortcomings after trying to slash taxes by £45 billion.
Cementing his fate as the second shortest-serving chancellor in the UK’s history, Karteng failed to regain his tarnished reputation. He’d kept a relatively low profile up until confirming his departure.
Kwarteng joins a growing list of MPs, almost all of them Conservatives, who are departing before the general election. Other include Dominic Raab, who confirmed his departure from Parliament at the next general election.
Tory MP Matthew Offord said the role had “required great sacrifices in my personal and professional lives” and will not stand again for the seat he has filled since 2010.
