When Do New Episodes Of ‘The Acolyte’ Drop On Disney+? Release Schedule

Get ready to wield your lightsabers. A brand new prequel series, The Acolyte, is premiering tonight on Disney+. The first two episodes will air together on June 4, but what about the rest of the season? Here’s what to know about The Acolyte Season 1 release schedule.

Part of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars franchise, The Acolyte takes place at the end of the High Republic era before the events of the main Star Wars movies. The sci-fi series explores how an esteemed organization like the Jedi Order could be at its peak and on the brink of turmoil as seen during the Skywalker saga. “A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes but discovers the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated,” the official logline reads.

Series showrunner Leslye Headland — who was first introduced to the George Lucas films as a teenager — chose to focus on personal conflicts and one-on-one battles to introduce the new characters in The Acolyte. “If Star Wars is about the underdog versus the institution, [in The Acolyte] the Jedi are the institution,” she told StarWars.com.

The director continued, “I was so interested in a storyline where the Jedi were at the height of their power — and I don’t mean The Phantom Menace, because at that point, there’s a Sith Lord in the Senate that they’re not picking up on.” Headland wanted to go even further, like when seeing a Sith seemed as likely as meeting a velociraptor. “Like it’s a thing I’ve heard of, but it’s not a thing that you would ever consider you’d be interacting with.”

While carving her own path with The Acolyte, Headland wanted to weave her love for the Star Wars franchise, books, and Expanded Universe lore into the story. “You’ll see a half Theelin, half human Jedi, Jecki, played by Dafne Keen, which was always a dream of mine,” Headland revealed. The series will also have “some EU lore,” introduce a Zygerrian Jedi and create a new species. “There are a couple of really big EU ideas that are utilized both early on in the series and later in the series,” she also teased to the Star Wars website.

The series stars Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss. Find out how and when to tune in to The Acolyte, below.
