Alien: Romulus Is Going Back to the Franchise’s Roots In New Trailer

The official trailer for Alien: Romulus is here, revealing a clearer look at more Xenomorphs and Facehuggers ahead of the film’s premiere this August.

This claustrophobic slice of the next Alien movie comes in at two minutes long and gives audiences more from its characters and the creatures out to get them. Not too much from the story is revealed though, as the footage instead focuses more on dark and seemingly endless corrodors. You can see it all in the latest Alien: Romulus trailer below.

Alien: Romulus wants to take fans back to the suffocating settings and dimly-lit hallways the franchise is known for. An official description even says longtime Alien enjoyers can expect to go back to the roots of what made the series special.

“While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station,” the description says, “a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Alien: Romulus comes from Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead (2013) director Fede Álvarez and stars Cailee Spaeny (Civil War, Priscilla), Isabela Merced (Madame Web, Transformers: The Last Knight), and David Jonsson (Industry, Deep State). Today’s trailer offers a better look at some of the scenes seen in March’s teaser trailer, which mostly served to whet the appetite of hungry Alien fans.

There are a few reasons sci-fi enjoyers are looking forward to Alien: Romulus. Aside from Álvarez’s history in horror and the promise of a return to the franchise’s roots, the movie will use practical effects for some of its Xenomorph creatures. Álvarez also teased late last year that the original film’s director, Ridley Scott, said the film was “f**king great.”

“My family knows it was one of the best moments of my life to have a master like him, who I admired so much, to even watch a movie I made, but particularly something like this… and talk to me for an hour about what he liked about it,” he said. “One of the best compliments he said was, ‘The dialogue is great. Are you the writer?’ Yes!”

Alien: Romulus premieres August 16, 2024. For more, you can read our interview with Álvarez, where he spoke about how the film fits into the franchise.
