Only 2 Netflix original movies are in today’s top 10, but one is a hit

In recent months, Netflix has had an increasingly difficult time getting its original movies to stick around on the top 10 row, but there have been some exceptions. The latest exception is Under Paris, which is a new shark attack movie from France that took the streaming service by storm and quickly ascended the charts after joining the Netflix library on June 5.

The ascent of Under Paris is especially surprising when considering that the incredible Godzilla Minus One made its surprise debut on the streamer just days ago. Godzilla is still #2 on the top 10 movies chart, but Under Paris jumped straight to the top spot.

Directed by Xavier Gens (Lupin, Cold Skin), the movie follows a scientist, a conservationist, and a police commander who join forces to stop mutant super shark Lilith from turning the upcoming World Triathlon Championships in Paris into a terrifying bloodbath.

It’s a solid premise, but the sparkling reviews of Under Paris have also certainly helped it attract such a wide audience. Variety says the movie “swims rather than sinks as it adds life to a genre that’s been bloodless for far too long.” The Guardian calls it “one of the best shark movies ever made.” Even the less-than-glowing reviews have nice things to say about it.

While it might be forgotten when a fresh tidal wave of originals hits the service next week, Under Paris is proof that Netflix can still mint surprising hits.

Here’s the complete list of the top 10 movies on Netflix for June 6, 2024:

  1. Under Paris (Netflix Original)
  2. Godzilla Minus One
  3. 300: Rise of an Empire
  4. The Lego Movie
  5. Home
  6. Divergent
  7. A Million Ways to Die in the West
  8. Colors of Evil: Red (Netflix Original)
  9. Shrek
  10. The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The latest kid-friendly additions are dominating the rest of the chart, including The Lego Movie, Home, Shrek, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Netflix knows that giving parents content that will keep their kids occupied is still a valuable commodity.
