Four feared dead in Hamilton Island military helicopter crash

Four people are feared dead in a helicopter crash off Queensland’s Hamilton Island.

The helicopter crashed during Operation Sabre exercises about 11pm on Friday with the wreckage found in water off Shute Harbour.

Emergency services are currently responding to the incident.

It is understood four were on board the helicopter.

Paramedics were on standby on Friday night but 7NEWS understands they are no longer on-scene.

It is not yet clear what caused the helicopter to crash.

Exercise Talisman Sabre is conducted biennially and is the largest combined training activity between the Australian Defence Force and the United States military.

It is unclear whether the helicopter is Australian or American.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has been contacted for comment.
