Gunther Werks is taking a break from tuning 911s to take a crack at its own lightweight, limited edition take on the BMW E30 M3
The BMW M3 has always been a favorite of car enthusiasts, but over the last couple of years, it has been interesting to track the progression of the E30 model. The late ’80s Bimmer went from being the favorite of hipsters, to an autocross favorite, and now it will be getting the full restomod treatment from Gunther Werks.
This weekend, the tuning house teased the project, announcing that the “legendary icon [is] about to be remastered by our special division at GW9 by Gunther Werks.” Along with that, it shared a picture of the car, which looks relatively restrained by the company’s standards.
The car in the image sports a set of Vorsteiner alloy wheels, which is hardly a surprise since both companies were founded by the same man, Peter Nam. Additional modifications have not been revealed, but Gunther Werks’ choice of hashtags is enlightening.

On Facebook, the company chose to use the #carbonfiber, #powertoweight, #handmade, and #limitededition tags. All suggest that it will employ carbon fiber extensively in order to cut weight and improve performance.
Whether the company decides to mess with the notably rev-happy S14 inline-four-cylinder engine remains to be seen. However, “GW9” is Gunther Werks’ accessories division. So far, the subbrand’s automotive output has been limited to carbon fiber aero elements and trim pieces for the Porsche 911. Its more extensively modified Porsches have been sold under the Gunther Werks label, which may explain why this E30 M3 looks less over-the-top than those.
Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a little while before we find out for certain what’s going on under the hood of the remastered M3. Gunther Werks has not revealed specifically when it will unveil all of the details related to it.
