Leeds United’s first Yorkshire derby of the season ended in a 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke made two changes from the side which beat Ipswich Town last weekend, with Jamie Shackleton and Crysencio Summerville replacing the injured Sam Byram and departed Luis Sinisterra.

The visitors threatened and inside seven minutes, Michael Smith crossed for Josh Windass, but he was unable to generate any power on his effort.

Joel Piroe was handed his Elland Road debut, returning to the side after being cup-tied for the midweek trip to Salford City and he found a pass from Summerville, before pulling a shot wide from the edge of the box.

Summerville was next to go close for the Whites, he played a lovely one-two with Georginio Rutter, but couldn’t keep his strike down.

In the 38th minute, Summerville played Rutter into the Owls box with a lovely through ball, but he was unable to get the better of Devis Vasquez from a narrow angle.

Four minutes later, Gnonto dangerously broke into the box, but he could only find the side netting from a tight angle, as the two sides went in level at the break.

Half time: Leeds United 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

The Whites made a positive start to the second half, Jamie Shackleton cut inside from the left flank and into the Wednesday box, before curling an effort inches over.

Illan Meslier was called into action when Michael Smith brought down a high ball and shot on the turn, but he couldn’t get the better of the Frenchman.

At the other end Vasquez made a fine stop when Rutter played Summerville in on goal to keep the scores level and from the resulting corner, Luke Ayling headed a Gnotno cross into the ground and wide.

With the game going end-to-end, the Owls carved out another opportunity and Meslier made a fine stop to deny Windass as he raced through one-on-one.

Gnonto was next to try his luck, he fired a bending effort from 20 yards after cutting inside from the right, with his attempt going just wide.

The Owls had a great chance from a well-worked corner, Windass broke into the Leeds box and teed up Callum Paterson, but he fired over from close range.

Rutter did really well to beat the offside trap in the 77th minute, latching onto a lovely pass from Ethan Ampadu, but he could only fire straight at Vasquez.

Leeds continued to press in the closing stages, with Ampadu firing over, Gnonto seeing a shot deflect off target and Piroe firing wide from a free-kick, without getting a breakthrough, so had to settle for a point.
