Minnesota’s Stillwater Prison in lockdown as 100 furious inmates ‘take over an entire unit’ after being locked in with no access to showers for days due to understaffing

Minnesota‘s Stillwater Prison has been placed into lockdown after around 100 furious inmates refused to return to their cells in protest of not having access to clean water.  

A number of convicts took over a portion of the facility on Sunday morning after not being able to shower for days due to understaffing at the all-male prison, according to reports. 

The Minnesota Department of Corrections spokesperson Andy Skoogman said they’ve activated members of the Crisis Negotiation Team and, ‘out of an abundance of caution.’

Michelle Gross, Communities United Against Police Brutality’s President, said: ‘We just received information that prisoners peacefully protesting a lack of access to clean water have taken over a cell block at MCF-Stillwater prison.

Minnesota’s Stillwater Prison has been placed into lockdown after around 100 furious inmates refused to return to their cells in protest of not having access to clean water

‘They have been locked in with no access to ice or showers for days due to understaffing. Some of the corrections officers are standing in solidarity with them.   

‘Corrections officers are free to leave the area. Prisoner rights groups are asking people to go to Stillwater Prison to bear witness.’ 

EMS command has requested 10 additional ambulances to respond to staging in addition to the eight ambulances currently on scene. 

No injuries have been reported and tactical teams have not made entry yet.
