Pakistan vs Bangladesh Highlights, Asia Cup 2023: Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 7 wickets in Super 4 clash

Agha Salman hits the winning runs again Shakib Al Hasan as Pakistan complete the 194-run chase in 39.3 overs to win the match by 7 wickets. Agha Salman take Pakistan home along with Mohammad Rizwan, who returns unbeaten on 63(79).

Mohammad Rizwan completes his half-century, takes 71 balls to reach the milestone.

Pakistan are six runs away from win. PAK: 188/3 (39 overs)

The scoreboard keeps ticking as Pakistan add 9 runs in the last three overs. Rizwan is three runs short from his half-century as Pakistan need another 26 to win the match. PAK: 168/3 (36 overs)

Imam-ul-Haq hits Mehidy Hasan for a six and a boundary but the bowler has the final laugh as he strikes later in the over. Imam is cleaned up for 78(84). 

Agha Salman has joined the proceedings. PAK: 159/3 (33 overs)

The partnership between Rizwan and Imam has moved beyond 70 and the game is more or less out of Bangladesh’s grip. 

Rizwan is inching towards the 40s, while Imam is well settled, playing at 68(80) at the other end. PAK: 148/2 (32 overs)

Imam-ul-Haq hits Shakib Al Hasan for a maximum and Rizwan follows it up with a boundary against Mehidy. 

Pakistan have moved to 139/2 in 29 overs. They now need just 55 more to win from here.

Shakib Al Hasan introduces himself into the attack and Rizwan hits the Bangladesh skipper for a boundary. Shakib pitches it at length and Rizwan guides it towards the fine leg region for a boundary. PAK: 120/2 (26 overs)

Shoriful Islam bowls a decent over as three runs come from it and Imam then smashes Mehidy Hasan Miraz for a maximum in the next, which also gets him to his half-century. 

Meanwhile, Pakistan are cruising towards a big win as Bangladesh desperately search for wickets. PAK: 114/2 (25 overs)

Mohammad Rizwan plays a fine sweep as Mehidy Hasan pitches the ball onto his leg, which races away for a four. PAK 102-2 (23 overs)

Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq are playing as per the situation as they show no rush. They have added 22(39), with Imam being five runs away from his half-century. PAK: 96/2 (22 overs)

Mehidy Hasan is introduced in the attack and he almost gets the wicket of Imam in his first ball, but DRS saves the batter. After being given LBW, Imam opts for a review and TV replay confirm that the ball was missing the stumps. 

The spinner gives just one single in his over. PAK: 89/2 (19 overs)

Mohammad Rizwan hits Hasan Mahmud for a six and a boundary but Taskin keeps things under control as he gives just three singles in the next over. PAK: 88/2 (18 overs)

Taskin Ahmed cleans up Babar Azam for 17(22). Drops it at length and Babar tries to punch it back on to the pitch, but the ball hits the lower portion of his bat and bounces backwards before crashing on to the stumps. 

Mohammad Rizwan joins the run chase. PAK: 74/2 (15.3 overs) | need 120 runs 

Another loud appeal for LBW by Taskin Ahmed as he beats Imam and hits his pads. The bowler asks for a review but the ball was pitching outside leg, so they lose their second and final review. 

Imam then hits Hasan Mahmud for a boundary and maximum as Pakistan race to 74/1 in 15 overs.

Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq combine to hit 13 runs in the last two overs, which includes a boundary by the Pakistan skipper. PAK: 57/1 (13 overs)

A loud appeal for LBW as Hasan Mahmud pitches at length and it hits the pads of Imam. The bowler was confident and convinced the skipper to take a review. Ultraedge confirmed there was bat involved but it was pitching marginally outside leg. PAK: 44/1 (11 overs)

Shoriful Islam gets Bangladesh the first breakthrough as Fakhar Zaman is trapped LBW for 20(31). The batter takes a review but TV replay confirms there was no bat involved and the ball was in the line of stumps and crashing it.

Babar Azam is the new man in the middle. PAK: 37/1 (10 overs)

Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman have settled in nicely as they take Pakistan to 35/0 in 9 overs. Imam is batting on 15(24) and Fakhar is batting at 20 from 30 balls.

Play resumes once again. Shoriful with the ball for Bangladesh, and he starts off with the short delivery against Zaman.

Lights are coming on now as the two umpires make their way into the field and so does the players as well. We will be seeing the match resuming within minutes now. 

The play has comed to a halt due to a floodlight failure. One of the floodlights has gone off and players leave the field.

Taskin Ahmed keeps it under control as three runs come in his over. Pakistan are taking things slow at the moment and have only mustered 15 runs in 5 overs.

Shoriful Islam bowls another tight over as just one single come in it. PAK: 12/0 (4 overs)

After starting with a couple of boundaries, Taskin Ahmed keeps it tight from his end as just two runs come in his second over. PAK: 11/0 (3 overs)

Shoriful Islam will share the new ball with Taskin and he gets some movement in the air. He starts with a maiden over. PAK: 8/0 (2 overs) 

Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq start the Pakistan 194-run chase. Taskin Ahmed leads the attack for Bangladesh as Fakhar hits the pacer for two boundaries. PAK: 8/0 (1 over)

Naseem Shah also picks two wickets in one over as Pakistan fold the Bangladesh innings for 193 in 38.4 overs. 

Afif Hossain and Shoriful Islam are the final two batters to depart. 

Haris Rauf finishes with 4/19 in 6 overs, Naseem Shah scalps 3/34 in 5.4 overs.

Iftikhar Ahmed strikes as Shamim Hossain is out caught for 16(23). The batter tries to take the aerial route against the part-timer but mistimes his shot, which gives him the elevation but not the distance and is caught by Imam-ul-Haq inside the 30-yard-circle. BAN: 176-6 (35 overs)

Pakistan mean business and look to wrap the Bangladesh innings as early as possible. Shaheen Shah Afridi is reintroduced in the attack and Shamim Hossain, the new batter in the middle, hits the pacer for a maximum. BAN: 174-5 (34 overs)

Mushfiqur Rahim also completes his half-century. He takes 71 balls to reach the milestone and will have to now guide Bangladesh to a strong finish. Bangladesh have breached 150-mark but have also lost half their side. BAN: 152-5 (31 overs)

Faheem Ashraf breaks the 100-run stand between Shakib and Mushfiqur. The former falls for 53(57). BAN: 147/5 (29.1 overs)

Shakib Al Hasan completes his half-century, takes 53 balls to reach the milestone as Bangladesh reach 142-4 in 28 overs. Mushfiqur is batting in his 40s. 

Agha Salman is introduced in the attack and he is whacked for a boundary each by Shakib and Mushfiqur. 

Mushfiqur then hits Shadab for a boundary in the next over. BAN: 139-4 (27 overs)

The boundaries have dried up as just five runs come in the last two overs bowled by Haris Rauf and Shadab Khan. BAN reach 120/4 in 25 overs.

Babar Azam is nicely rotating his bowlers as he hands the ball to Haris Rauf, who is welcomed with a boundary by Shakib Al Hasan. 

Meanwhile, Shadab continues from the other end and gives three singles in the over. BAN: 114-4 (23 overs)

Mushfiqur Rahim too joins the party and hits Shadab Khan hits for a boundary. 

Six runs come from the over. BAN 105-4 (21 overs)

Shakib Al Hasan hits Naseem Shah for consecutive fours as 12 runs come in the last two overs. He also adds a 50-run stand with Mushfiqur Rahim. BAN: 99-4 (20 overs)

Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan are slowly rebuilding as the pair add 39 runs off 52 for the fifth wicket. 

Naseem Shah also comes to bowl his first over after hurting himself earlier in the match. BAN: 87/4 (18 overs)

Change of ends for Ashraf and he bowls an economical over. Two runs come from the over. 

Shadab Khan is introduced from the other end and he too keeps it tight as five runs come in his over. BAN: 72/4 (15 overs)

Pakistan fans can breath a sigh of relief as Naseem Shah joins the proceedings. 

Shaheen is reintroduced in the attack and he gives away seven runs in his over, which include a boundary by Shakib. BAN: 65/4 (13 overs)

Excellent first powerplay for Pakistan, following which Faheem Ashraf continues from the other end. He concedes four runs in the over. 

We can see Naseem trying to roll his arms on the sidelines. He, however, is yet to join the proceedings. BAN: 53-4 (11 overs)

Faheem Ashraf comes into the attack and he starts with an economical over as just one run come from it.

Haris Rauf continues from the other end and he cleans up Towhid Hridoy in the first ball of his second over, who departs for 2(9). BAN: 47/4 (9.3 overs)

Haris Rauf joins the party as he removes Mohammad Naim for 20(25) to pick his 50th ODI wicket. 

Two singles and a boundary come in the over as BAN reach 46/3 in 8 overs.

Just when things were going smooth for Pakistan, Naseem Shah injures himself while trying to save a boundary in Shaheen’s over. The pacer bowls at 140kph case on the pads and it brushes Naim’s body and races towards fine leg. Naseem puts in an excellent diving effort but he hurts himself in the process and the ball also races towards the fence. 

He remains down as physio rush to attend the pacer, following which he leaves the field with them.

Naim then finishes the over with another boundary as BAN reach 44/2 in 7 overs.

Shakib manages to get a boundary against Naseem as five runs come in the over. BAN: 36/2 (6 overs)

Shaheen Afridi brings an end to Litton Das’ stay in the middle. The batter is caught-behind for 16(13). 

Shakib Al Hasan joins the proceedings. BAN: 31/2 (5 overs)

Mohammad Naim and Litton Das combine to hit Naseem Shah for three boundaries. Naim welcomes the pacer with a cracking four and Litton joins the party later in the over, who hits two boundaries. BAN: 26/1 (4 overs)

FOUR! Naim is away! Shaheen drifted onto the pads and the tall left-hander just helped the ball on its way. The outfield is lightning-quick.

FOUR! Was in the air but was in the gap. The timing on that one was perfect from Litton Das. Just opened the face of the bat a little bit at the last moment to get the placement. What a way to get off the mark.

OUT! Naseem Shah strikes first ball as Mehidy Hasan Miraz is out for a golden duck. It was a nothing delivery, to be honest. A loosener on the pads and Mehidy just chipped it straight to the square leg fielder. Not the start Bangladesh were hoping for. But Naseem won’t complain. He has got the last match’s centurion out for a duck.

The first delivery swung away and beat Naim, the second came back in sharply to wrap the left-hander on the pads, the third once again went away but was left alone. The next delivery was driven straight to the fielder. The fifth one came back in and hit Naim on the thigh pad. The last ball was defended well. A maiden to start with by Shaheen Afridi.

Bangladesh have decided to persist with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mohammad Naim as their openers. That means Litton Das will bat at No.3. Shaheen Shah Afridi has the new ball in hand for Pakistan.

After observing a minute of silence in the memory of former Zimbabwe cricketer Heath Streak, who lost his prolonged battle with cancer recently, the Pakistan and Bangladesh players have lined up for the national anthems.

This is a much flatter pitch. This is the best batting pitch so far. More runs here. Anything above 300 will always be tough. It is extremely hot and humid, which will take a toll on the fielders. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan wins toss, ops to bat vs Pakistan in an Asia Cup Super 4 match in Lahore.

“Babar is still learning the art. Shakib is more experienced. Very difficult to compare them. But I would say it’s too early. Shakib obviously controls the game better in the middle with all his experience,” said Waqar Younis.

“With limited resources, the way Shakib leads Bangladesh is commendable. Babar has the resources. His captaincy will improve,” said Aamir Sohail.

While there is joy in having Litton Das back, Bangladesh will miss the services of Najmul Hasan Shanto. The centurion of the last match has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. Liton is expected to walk into the XI but it will be interesting to see where he bats.

This is the last match of this year’s Asia Cup in Pakistan as the action will shift to Colombo for the remaining matches of the tournament including the big final. Expect a large crowd today at the Gaddafi Stadium as Pakistan aim to begin Super 4 on a high.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz has emerged as one of the top all-rounders for Bangladesh in limited-overs cricket and that is doing a lot in a side that has a world-class all-rounder like Shakib Al Hasan. In their last must-win match against Afghanistan, Miraz, while opening the batting, stepped up to the occasion and smashed an unbeaten 112 off 119 balls and with the ball, he was one of the most economical of the Bangladesh bowlers returning with figures of 1/41 in his 8 overs on a high-scoring venue.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who is the current No.1-ranked ODI batter, has a good record against pretty much all the countries. He didn’t get an opportunity to bat against India but if his record 151-run knock against Nepal was anything to go by then we could be in for another Babar special today. The right-hander is in top form. In the last 10 ODIs that he has played, he is averaging 60.

If Bangladesh want to maintain their stellar head-to-head record of the last five matches, then they will have to get the better of Shaheen Shah Afridi, or at least keep him at bay. The left-arm seamer is easily the best new-ball bowler of the world on current form and like we saw in the match against India, he has the capability to break the backbone of an opposition batting in his first spell.

In a major boost for Bangladesh, wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das has recovered from a viral fever that kept him away from the group stages and has joined the squad. He should be straightaway drafted into the XI today. 

Just like India and Pakistan, Bangladesh will Pakistan in an ODI match for the first time since the 2019 ODI World Cup. As far as head-to-head stats are concerned, Pakistan are way ahead. Bangladesh have only managed to beat them five times in the 37 ODIs that they have played against each other but there’s a catch. Out of those five Bangladesh wins against Pakistan in ODIs, four have come in their last five meetings.

There’s way more to the Asia Cup than just India vs Pakistan. Bangladesh and Pakistan have had their own share of intense encounters in the tournament. And today’s match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore promises to add another chapter to that. On paper, Pakistan are obviously superior but count Bangladesh out at your own risk. After losing to Sri Lanka quite badly in the tournament opener, they staged a stunning comeback against Afghanistan to book their Super 4 spot. Pakistan, on the other hand, functioned like awell-oiled machine in the two group matches.
