LaPointe RTW Spring 2024 – WWD

Sally LaPointe hasn’t presented on the runway in over three years, so for her return, she decided to shake things up a bit, taking over Crosby Street for an open air show. “I’m letting go of all the rules and traditions just doing something that feels very  true to me,” she said on the ground floor of her studio, which was being used for a makeshift backstage.

It was technically a private event, but onlookers stood in the sweltering humidity craning their necks hoping to get in on some fashion week action. LaPointe certainly didn’t disappoint. A marching band led the way for a tight lineup of just 28 looks. “I only wanted to show the best of the best,” she said.

Inspiration for this season struck her while at a corner bodega staring at the Mega Millions lottery tickets. “The clothes are what my vibe would be if I won- there’s sex appeal and lots of sass” LaPointe explained.

Color is essential for her and this time inky blues, silver and copper foil and a zesty lemon she referred to as “sprite” were used for suits, asymmetrical sheer dresses and skirts, dripping with paillettes and her signature feather embellishments.

This was the ultimate party collection, perfect for nightclubs or concerts, so it’s fitting that a floor-length version of the pink sarong she designer for Beyonce on her Renaissance World Tour made an appearance, this time with midriff-baring cutouts.

It was styled underneath a boxy double-breasted blazer. Outerwear is a growing category for LaPointe and her cropped leather biker jackets were certainly winners. They added some New York grit to all the glam, as did a drop-shoulder trench with splotches resembling grease stains.

Thinking about her personal style, LaPointe topped off a few outfits with raver sunglasses. “You feel cooler, more strong somehow when you wear them,” she said of her favorite accessory. Those in the show weren’t produced under her own name, but she teased LaPointe eyewear could be on the horizon.
