Doja Cat is back to stealing everyone’s attention with her award-show looks. On Sept. 12, the musician attended the MTV VMAs wearing a spiderweb Monse dress, a platinum-blond buzzcut, Dior grillz, and “angel eyes” makeup. As you can see, there was a lot going on, so we wouldn’t blame you if you happened to miss another key detail of the ensemble: her colored contacts.

Doja Cat’s contacts were a dark green color in the iris, with a deep black pupil for the center. The shade was easy to miss, seeing that her natural eye color is a dark brown (and she did give us quite a few moments in this dress, hair, and makeup), but you could spot the subtle change in photos in contrast to the white shade of her shimmery pearl eyeshadow, a look that was taken to the next level thanks to the addition of water droplets around her orbital bone.

Colored contacts are an easy way to play up your eye makeup or just switch the way you look on a daily basis. It’s also one of the best-kept beauty secrets in Hollywood for celebrities at highly photographed red carpet events. (It’s been reported Kim Kardashian considers colored contacts one of her favorite ways to catch the light when she wants a more bright-eyed effect).

If you are someone who often gets photographed like Doja Cat or simply like the versatility that the look brings, you have plenty of options when it comes to contacts. From more natural-looking hues of green, blue, or brown to more obvious designs meant for dramatic effect, colored contacts can make a world of difference. For proof, take a closer look at Doja Cat’s entire VMAs look below.
