Stellantis plans to top its SUV lineup with a driver-focused, all-electric competitor for the Porsche Cayenne and BMW iX that has the U.S. market in its sights
Alfa Romeo’s vision for its future lineup is starting to take shape, and it’s got a punchy new plan up its sleeve. The company’s CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, spilled the beans that they’re gunning for BMW‘s iX with their very own all-electric SUV, set to hit the streets in 2027. This electrifying addition will strut its stuff on the STLA Large Platform.
Competing with the likes of the iX, the Porsche Cayenne EV, and an upcoming new sporty crossover the from Renault-owned brand, Alpine, this Italian newcomer will have a distinct focus on on-road performance. To maximize aerodynamic efficiency and range, expect it to ride lower than your typical SUVs.
This upcoming SUV is destined to become the flagship of Alfa Romeo’s lineup, surpassing the next-generation all-electric Stelvio in size, according to Autocar. The focus is squarely on the North American and Chinese markets, where the brand aims to make a significant impact.

“If I stay in Western Europe, I will never [build the car], because the volumes are small and because I don’t know how the segment will evolve,” Imparato told the British outlet.
Despite its larger SUV stature, the platform it’s built on suggests it could pack quite a punch in terms of performance. Utilizing the STLA Large chassis, it has the potential to incorporate up to three electric motors, possibly delivering power figures that venture into four digits. Imparato emphasized that, like all Alfa Romeos, the focus will remain on delivering an exceptional driving experience.
From a more practical perspective, the platform’s 800V architecture promises swift charging capabilities. It’s expected that it could recharge from 10 to 80 percent in just 30 minutes, offering a range of around 500 miles (805 km).
Furthermore, the upcoming Alfa Romeo SUV is expected to feature Stellantis‘ cutting-edge tech suite, the STLA Brain, which will likely include hands-free driving capabilities, an advanced infotainment system, and a digital experience that rivals Tesla.
The large SUV is just one of several electrified models in Alfa Romeo’s ambitious plan. Additionally, the Italian brand is expected to introduce a sub-compact-sized crossover and may consider a Guilietta compact hatch replacement.
