Alvaro Ovando Alvarez, 49, is arrested after police find his 10-year-old son driving pick-up truck down Arizona highway as his dad has a drink in the passenger seat

Police who pulled over a swerving truck on an Arizona highway found a 10-year-old driver, and his dad having a drink in the passenger seat.

Call handlers told troopers to look out for a red pick-up truck after receiving a 911 reporting the child ‘weaving and speeding’ along the Loop 101 in eastern Phoenix at about 3.30pm on Saturday afternoon.

The truck was spotted moments later by an officer who tried to flag it down after seeing it lurch between lanes near Scottsdale Road.

The officer gave chase after the young driver ignored the trooper’s instruction, quickly bringing the truck to a halt in the emergency lane of the 7th Street off-ramp before discovering its occupants’ unusual arrangement.

Alvaro Ovando Alvarez, 49, was found in the passenger seat and faces charges of endangerment, having an open container of alcohol, and unlawfully permitting a minor to drive.
