Angel City Football Club’s team that will be competing in The Soccer Tournament event in North Carolina begins play Friday.
The event, which made its debut last year, is a 7-on-7 winner-take-all competition. This year, a women’s-only field will be competing. Angel City’s team will open against Wrexham (9:30 a.m.) and then against the U.S. Women (4:30 p.m.). The final group-stage match will be played Saturday against Streetball Canada FC (7 p.m.)
All of the Angel City 7s’ games will be available to stream at thetournament.com.
“We are excited to welcome Angel City as the eighth and final team in our inaugural women’s tournament,” The Tournament Founder/CEO Jon Mugar said. “Angel City’s leadership has set the standard in so many ways and perfectly embodies what TST is all about. We are anticipating a momentous and electrifying event.”
The ACFC team will not have any first-team players on its roster. It features several Southern California products and will be coached by former U.S. National Team players Saskia Webber and Cobi Jones.
“Anywhere that women’s soccer is in this country, we want to be,” ACFC Co-Founder and President Julie Uhrman said in a statement. “We always talk about building a culture and environment where ‘fun and winning’ are at its core, and I can’t think of a better tournament to display this than TST.
If Angel City wins the $1 million prize, the money will be split between the players and Angel City’s impact work with L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks, building access to no-cost soccer for girls and gender expansive youth, ages 5-17.
