Ash falls from cement plant in south St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – Right now in south St. Louis City, there is a strange haze in the area.

An odd haze has filled the air surrounding the Buzzi Unicem USA concrete factory off President and Interstate 55. There’s still some sort of dusty haze in the air, and we’re not exactly sure what it is. Earlier, St. Louis firefighters were on the scene, responding to reports of a powdery substance creating this hazy atmosphere. While there were no visible flames, the presence of the substance has left many questions unanswered.

Crews are still working to identify the substance and determine if it poses any hazards to the community. FOX 2 has reached out to contacts within the St. Louis Fire Department for more information but is still awaiting a response.

Along I-55, we observed a significant plume emanating from the building earlier, almost resembling a dust cloud. A stop sign covered in a layer of substance, highlighting the extent of its reach, could be seen earlier.

When the initial call came in, the powder was covering everything in its path, including vehicles like the Nissan Rouge Runner. Again, crews are actively investigating what the substance could be, and as soon as we have more information, we’ll be sure to update you.

It’s important to note that there are apartments nearby, and residents may wake up to find a layer of dust on their cars. Locals in the area are urged to remain indoors and avoid contact with the substance until further notice.

FOX 2 will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
