The first open container district in Brookhaven will promote economic development and pedestrian traffic on Dresden Drive, an area Mayor John Park calls the “heart of the city.”
In August 2023, Brookhaven City Council established an entertainment district from Peachtree Road to Camille Drive, known as the Dresden District. It passed without discussion or public comment.
Within the Dresden District, pedestrians may walk around with alcoholic beverages from a participating establishment between the hours of 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. The drink, no more than 16 oz., must be contained and consumed in an official Dresden District cup.
“The goal of the district is to add to the appeal of the Dresden corridor as a neighborhood destination,” said District 2 Councilwoman Jennifer Owens. “Encouraging our residents to enjoy all the amenities this vibrant area has to offer strengthens our community as a whole.”
Bars and restaurants participating in the Dresden District are required to display a sign at the front door in public view.
“Any person who possesses an open alcoholic beverage outside the entertainment district, or after 10 p.m. within the district, or in an unauthorized container, is in violation of the city code and may be subject to a citation and/or fine,” the sign reads.
A ribbon cutting to kick off the district is planned for 5 p.m. on Friday, May 24, in the 1400 Block of Dresden Drive in Brookhaven.
