Did you know that the supremely savory burger steak can actually be made with one of the simplest yet most popular kinds of canned goods in the Philippines? That’s right– I’m talking about sardines in tomato sauce! And so you can recreate this meaty favorite without any red meat, using fish instead for some truly delicious Burger Steak Sardinas.
What is the Burger Steak Sardinas Recipe?
Let’s start with the basics by talking about what burger steak actually is. This is essentially a dish of patties, often made from beef, coated with a rich, thick gravy sauce that provides great savor. It’s not something that’s easy to resist, and so I tried my hand at making it with something a bit more accessible than beef. Our sardines provide a lot of meatiness to the patties! And it may shock you, but the tomato sauce actually play a role in the flavor of the gravy.
Another important ingredient is the tasty puso ng saging or banana heart. These have quite the unique and appealing flaky texture. And this quality is a big part of what make our patties so delicious! But what else will we need to put together for our recipe?
Burger Steak Sardinas Ingredients
First, let’s round up the components for the perfect gravy! You should have 2 tablespoons of butter, 5 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, and 1 cup of milk. The seasonings and spices also do a lot of the work in making our sauce as tasty as it is. And so you should get 1 teaspoon of onion powder, along with some salt and ground black pepper– just as much as you would prefer to have in your gravy.
Moving on to the patties, we will need 2 cans of sardines in tomato sauce, 1 banana heart we’ve minced, and then 1 egg. Next on our list are more seasonings, particularly 1 teaspoon of onion powder again, ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper. Finally, prepare ¼ cup of cooking oil for frying!
How to Make Burger Steak Sardinas
1. Preparing the banana heart
Get a bowl ready, and arrange your minced puso ng saging inside. Let’s sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of salt, which we would need to rub all over the banana heart.
Afterwards, you can wash the salt off. Then drain the ingredient of excess water.
2. Making the patties
We only need the sardines for this, so you must separate the fish from the sauce. Take a container, and put your sardines and banana heart from earlier inside.
We will also integrate the egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and ground black pepper. Now mix these all together thoroughly. Remember to mash the sardines as you are mixing. Then we may add our all-purpose flour gradually as we continue mixing. Keep this up until the mixture gets firm.
3. Shaping the patties
You should just scoop about ¼ cup of the mixture. Then on a clean surface, get this flat so it takes on a patty shape. Set your patties aside afterwards.
4. Creating the gravy
It’s time to work our delicious, velvety sauce into the recipe! Start by putting your butter in a saucepan and applying heat. Once your butter has melted fully, you can place the all-purpose flour inside. Just stir these together as you are cooking, and wait for lumps to form. When this happens, and the mixture takes on a medium brown color, pour the sauce from your canned sardines along with ½ cup of milk inside. You should be stirring while doing this.
You may add more milk in the process until we get that nice gravy thickness. After that, we will incorporate onion powder, salt, and ground black pepper to season the gravy. Then set your gravy aside for now.
5. Frying the patties
We’re nearly done! Simply get 2 tablespoons of cooking oil hot in a clean pan before you arrange your patties here. Fry these up using medium heat. Once the patties brown, you can turn them over, and fry the other side the same way.
How to Serve Burger Steak Sardinas
We now have our patties and gravy ready so just arrange them together on a serving plate. Place each patty on the plate, and top this with your gravy. I can’t have this without some newly cooked rice, and so I suggest you have this as a side dish too!

How to Store Burger Steak Sardinas
You can extend your burger steak’s shelf life simply by refrigerating it! Grab an airtight container, place your patties and gravy inside, and just let the dish get down to room temperature. Then you can place the container in the fridge for about 3 days more.
