Burndeners out in force for Rochdale’s Piethorn 10k run

Burndeners were there, both to tick off a race from the Club Championship list and collect the beer prize at the end!

Classed as a fell race in honour of its numerous undulations, the race was a challenge for even the most seasoned of runners.

But the Burnden family were there to welcome all runners home before heading off to the pub to catch the Lionesses in action.

Gillian McGowan and Kath and Andrew Berry took on the brutal course of the Tour de Mon Sportive last week and survived to tell the tale.

The cycling challenge takes in the breathtaking scenery as riders traverse the entire coastline of Anglesey, but the trio were left breathless with the relentless climbs of the course.

They all signed up to do the ‘Mawr’ – 106-mile distance but two punctures, the loss of two hours and ferocious winds forced the two ladies to opt for the shorter 62-mile distance, while Andrew completed the 106.

Michael Kermode chose the Leeds Half Marathon for his latest challenge and achieved a sub-two-hour time of 1:56:08.

Part of the Leeds Running Festival, the Half takes place in Roundhay Park – one of the biggest city parks in Europe and host to many a concert gig. Runners follow a varied route through stunning parkland, lakes, woodland and gardens.

It was Cheryl Dunleavy’s 200th parkrun last weekend and she almost did not realise. Luckily for her, she had a spare tutu to hand for the occasion and completed Bolton’s course in 38:54.

Joining her at Bolton was husband, Andy Dunleavy, who finished first Burndener this week and in eighth overall position out of 271 in 21:10. First Burnden lady was Gemma Chapman, in 32:36.
