Chandigarh civic body issues notification for mayoral election to be held on 30 January

New Delhi: To address the ongoing debate over the postponement of the Chandigarh mayoral election, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has finally announced the date for the election. The election will now be held on 30 January, at 10 am.

Earlier this week, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had ordered the Chandigarh administration to conduct the mayoral election on 30 January. This order had previously postponed the election from 18 January.

The high court had taken this decision after hearing a petition filed by AAP councillor Kuldeep Kumar.

The petition demanded that the mayoral election should be held immediately as it is high time that the people of Chandigarh should get a mayor. The AAP councillor also raised the issue of horse-trading and intimidation of councillors against the settled principle of free and fair elections.

In the notification, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has mentioned that the Deputy Commissioner of Chandigarh, Vinay Pratap Singh, will act as the prescribed authority in the election. A meeting of the divisional commissioner or prescribed authority is to be held at 10 am at the assembly hall of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

According to the notification, the Chandigarh Police will ensure that no ruckus takes place in or around the civic body’s office before, during or after the election process.
