Cillian Murphy is a name almost every tongue has talked about in the last year. His portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” made fans fall in love with Murphy’s talents yet again.
Fresh off his performance, Cillian Murphy is basking in the glow of the awards season. With nominations for both the BAFTA and Oscar for Best Actor, his performance as the “father of the atomic bomb” has solidified his place among Hollywood’s elite. Yet, despite the grandeur of the silver screen, Murphy perhaps has a deeper connection to a different stage: the world of live theatre.
Cillian Murphy revealed how he feels more nervous on a film set than a theatre
Cillian Murphy is one of the finest actors in Hollywood. He has featured in some of the biggest movies and television shows like Oppenheimer, Inception, and Peaky Blinders. Besides, he has done much theatre work since the 1990s. In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, Murphy revealed how he is more comfortable acting in theatres than on a live movie set.
“The distinction (between movie set and theatre) being that when you do a play, you retain control, in so far as, if it is a terrible night, you know tomorrow you can fix it. But in film, there is no fixing it.” – Cillian Murphy on Desert Island Discs
Cillian Murphy, despite his brilliance, experiences nervousness while acting. He finds the lack of control and the pressure of permanence in film more nerve-wracking compared to the live, dynamic environment of the stage. A bad night on stage can be corrected the next night, but a bad shot once finalized for a movie is made permanent for generations to come.
Cillian Murphy has no issues to return as Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders
While Murphy has been a famous actor for years, he has become a household name after his portrayal of Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders. Lasting almost a decade, the series has spanned six seasons with Murphy in the center of the action. It was, however, announced that the sixth season was the final one. However, Murphy has not ruled out a potential return to playing the role of the British Crime Lord.
“If there is more story to tell, and if Stephen Knight delivers a script like I know he can, then I will be there.” “I mean, if we want to watch 50-year-old Tommy Shelby, I will be there. Let’s do it.” –Cillian Murphy on Desert Island Discs
Only time will tell whether or not Murphy will actually return to being Thomas Shelby. For the time being, his fans are rooting for him to grab some gold at Oscar and BAFTA for his hard work. Peaky Blinders is available to stream on Netflix.
