In the latest installment of “Minuscule Yet Highly Bothersome Developments Within My Life,” I’ve officially reached my threshold with charging cords. While there are endless benefits to living through the technology renaissance, the cons (albeit small) are deeply frustrating — and many revolve around the overwhelming amount of USB cables that are scattered throughout my apartment. My laptop needs a charging cord, my wireless headphones need a charging cord, hell, even my LED lightbulbs need a charging cord (I like rechargeable light bulbs, sue me!).

The overarching dilemma is that I’m majorly fatigued by the abundance of cords within my home, all of which inevitably wind up tangled, scrunched in the back of an ominous drawer, and so distorted that I can’t even keep track of which ones are compatible with which devices. So, when I spotted the Clutch Pro Lightning Portable Charger ($40) on a recent flight, my interest was immediately piqued. Unlike other portable chargers, this model is designed to magnetize to your phone, with only a tiny USB cable (which comes attached to the actual device) necessary to refuel my phone’s battery.

Clutch was kind enough to send me a sample of its bestselling tech gadget to try out for myself, and I’ve been wildly impressed with not only how easy it is to use, but how seamlessly it charges my phone — and in a short amount of time, no less. Keep reading for my full review of the Clutch Pro Lightning Charger to see how this cool tech works to elevate my day-to-day.

What I Like About the Clutch Pro Lightning Portable Charger

Naturally — as evidenced by my previous rant — I love that this portable charger doesn’t require a separate USB cable because it magnetizes to my actual phone. The tool comes with a sticky magnet ring that’s easy to position on the back of a bare phone, which helps the charger stick to your actual device. It also has a built-in cable that I can simply flip up and plug into my phone’s charging port, thus initiating the charging process — no extra cords necessary.

While the Clutch charger has 5,000 mAh of power, the tool’s build is remarkably sleek and compact. More often than not, I forget that it’s stuck to the back of my phone at all, because it just feels like an extension of my device rather than a separate accessory. It comes in three different colorways (black, pink, and white), giving me the freedom to shop out an option that best matches my phone’s style.

I also appreciate that unlike other chargers, this device charges quickly, and requires only two hours to fulfill its full battery. Per the brand, the tool is TSA-friendly, so frequent flyers can relax knowing they won’t be stopped while going through security. Simply slip it into your personal carry-on bag, and you’ll be on your merry way.

What’s Worth Noting

The device can either be used on a case-free iPhone or with a MagSafe case — like the Clutch Lima Phone Strap Set ($84). I’ll admit: as someone who likes to stylize her outfit down to the last accessory and who does not own a magnetic phone case, it’s difficult having to forgo my usual cute phone case in order to effectively charge my device. While Clutch does have a charger-compatible phone case you can purchase separately, it’s only available in one color option and five iPhone sizes (the iPhone 14 Plus through the iPhone 15 Pro Max).

With that, I recommend purchasing a MagSafe phone case in order to get the most out of this device. And if you have an attachment to your current phone case and don’t want to remove it each time you use this charger, I recommend shopping out another charging option that’s more suited to your lifestyle.
