FX’s historical drama Shōgun, based on James Clavell’s 1975 bestselling novel set in 1600s feudal Japan, is confirmed to return for seasons two and three, as the Disney-owned company shared that both seasons are currently in development.
FX and Hulu shared on Thursday that a writers room will open in the summer to explore the continuation of the story beyond the original novel.
The show’s first season co-creators, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, as well as Japanese producer and actor Hiroyuki Sanada, will be involved in the development of the upcoming seasons.
The show follows the story of Lord Yoshii Toranaga, played by Sanada, as he fights for his life against enemies on the Council of Regents who unite against him.
When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, its English pilot, John Blackthorne, comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne’s own enemies.
“This book has such a great legacy that so many movies, television shows, and other stories have taken from it over the decades since it came out,” Sanada told Arab News in a previous interview. “almost feels like it was meant to be told again, in that it felt weirdly and unexpectedly modern — it felt timeless.”
Wrapping up its first season in April with 10 episodes, Shōgun became one of FX’s most watched shows. It was ranked the most expensive scripted show the channel has ever done.
The first season can be streamed in its entirety on Hulu and Disney+.
