High-end Korean food, ‘must-have’ hummus, Chinese dishes with karaoke: a watch enthusiast’s Hong Kong restaurant picks

Johnathan Chan works in finance and is a co-founder of the Horology Club, a Hong Kong-based group of watch enthusiasts and collectors. He spoke to Andrew Sun.

I’m quite particular with what I like, and when I find it I’m happy to stick to the same spots. The older I get, the more I find myself gravitating towards Chinese and Asian cuisine.

However, I enjoy checking out interesting new venues for our events at The Horology Club.

I’m drawn to bars and places that have a fun atmosphere.

The interior of Mosu (3/F, M+, 38 Museum Drive, West Kowloon Cultural District. Tel: 2398 0291) has just the right mix of textures, lighting and architectural minimalism.
The presentations are simple yet tasteful, elevating Korean flavours to the next level. My favourite is the ember-roasted acorn noodles. I could have a whole meal of just that.

Xin Rong Ji (1&G/F, China Overseas Building, 138 Lockhart Road, Wan Chai. Tel: 3462 3516) is my favourite Peking duck spot.

The meat is succulent, while the skin has that perfect point of a melting crisp.

Another order is the marinated cold hairy crab with Chinese yellow wine. It is the perfect starter with very well-balanced crab roe.

Meat lovers assemble at 298 Nikuya Room (2/F, Pearl Oriental House, 60 Stanley Street, Central. Tel: 3568 9298).

This is the spot for a yakiniku fix. Everything is just so good.

There may (or may not) be a secret menu but if there is I can’t talk about it.

The moment you walk into Artemis & Apollo (G/F, 9-11 Moon Street, Wan Chai. Tel: 2818 8681), you feel like you’re transported to Greece.

The hummus here is a must-have and, personally, I think it’s the best in town.

A recent favourite is the local private kitchen Bo Zhan (3/F, Harilela House, 79 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2779 3030).

Its bitter gourd with salted egg yolk, and steamed prawns with rice sheets, are my top choices. It serves excellent Guangdong dishes, and the best part is that there’s a lounge area for karaoke for around 12 people. This place is guaranteed fun!

For someone’s first time in Hong Kong, I’d pick Bayfare Social (5/F, Rosewood Hong Kong, 18 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 3891 8732). The range of cuisines is great, the food is decent and the atmosphere and view is the perfect start to a great evening.

After dinner, we’d head to DarkSide bar (2/F, Rosewood Hong Kong, 18 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 3891 8732) for cocktails.

For local seafood, I love taking friends to Kam Tung Kitchen (Shop 5, 69-99 Shau Kei Wan Main Street East, Shau Kei Wan. Tel: 2569 4361).

The seafood is always fresh and some pairings there are unique but work so well, like the stir-fried clams with pork liver and vermicelli.

Coming from a French cooking background, he’s managed to fuse East and West wonderfully with his own twist at VEA (30/F, The Wellington, 198 Wellington Street, Central. Tel: 2711 8639) and I always leave impressed.
A place I’d love to go back to is Ezo Seafoods (170-165 Yamada, Kutchan-cho, Abuta-gun, Hokkaido 044-0081, Japan. Tel: +81 090 1203 7879) in Niseko in Hokkaido, Japan.
It has the best snow crab legs. After a long day on the ski slopes, it’s so satisfying to stuff your face with them with an ice cold Sapporo beer to replenish the fuel tank, and get ready to do it all again the next day.
