Huge housing project near San Jose BART site awaits crucial approval

SAN JOSE — A huge housing development with more than 900 residences now being eyed on a site near a San Jose BART station is nearing a crucial approval that’s needed before the project can begin construction.

The proposed project is slated to be built near the corner of East Julian Street and North 28th Street, a few blocks from the site of the future 28th Street/Little Portugal BART station in San Jose, city documents show.

The housing development is expected to add 913 residences if it is built and completed, according to environmental impact materials that are being circulated for public review. The site is east of the downtown and is near the U.S. Highway 101 and McKee Road interchange.

An affiliate headed up by Loida Kirkley, a developer who focuses primarily on South Bay real estate projects, has proposed the housing development.

The proposed residential project actually consists of three housing complexes next to each other.

Here are the details of what’s involved with the three segments of the development:

— 1325 East Julian Street would total 633 units and 11,500 square feet of commercial space. The buildings would be 10 stories. This complex is called Vila de Camila.

— 1347 East Julian Street would consist of 45 residential units in a single, six-story apartment building. The ground-floor commercial space would total 2,500 square feet. This building is called Casa Inclusiva.

— 1298 Tripp Avenue, which is called Residencias Arianna, would total 235 units in six-story structures. About 820 square feet of ground-floor commercial space is included.

The development is slated to occur in three phases, according to the city documents. As currently envisioned, construction could begin in the fall of 2024 and the final phase could be completed in early 2029.

The 45-unit development at 1347 East Julian would begin around October 2024 and be completed within 12 months.
