“I always take the approach that I design and picture our girl as California beach, but with Hollywood in your backyard. I’m always juxtaposing everything — there’s a tension of this super casual, laid-back, barefoot cool girl, but then all of a sudden, that cool girl ran off the beach and went to a red carpet event,” Le Superbe creative director Jeannine Braden told WWD.
Her spring collection offered exactly that, evidenced in look one: a sequined little bathing suit top, paired with green utility pants. “It stayed with the DNA of our brand, but at the same time, maybe gave it a little sprinkling of extra — I’m not afraid of extra,” she said of the look. “I think you can be extra, but I’m also realistic about having something you can wear everyday.”
Braden’s approach of offering price-friendly, unfussy silhouettes with optimistic, colorful details worked well through her spring line. Highlights of the assortment ranged from an ombre lace “throuple” (a boxy boyfriend button-up, little camisole and trousers) and hand-drawn palm printed breezy layers to signature midi skirts (pleated, or sequined and paillette-decorated), embellished shirting and a bestselling knit halterneck dress, updated with 3D crochet floral accent.
Braden said she shot her collection with photographer Michele Laurita at the Eric Lloyd Wright Estate (the unfinished, modern property of Frank Lloyd Wright’s grandson), located above First Point Malibu, which played into the idea of the collection’s juxtapositions. Braden even named the collection’s styles after streets along the Pacific Coast Highway, a special tie-in to her Southern California brand.
