Over the course of the trailer, Swift’s Look What You Made Me Do plays menacingly in the background – not the version from her 2019 album Reputation, but Taylor’s Version – Swift’s new, re-recorded version of the song.
Though we didn’t get to hear the entire thing, this is the song’s global debut ahead of Reputation (Taylor’s Version) dropping – and though Swift hasn’t revealed when it’ll be going live, it looks like the songs may already be recorded.
It’s also perfectly suited to Wilderness’s revenge-based theme. The show stars Jenna Coleman as Liv, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen as her husband, Will. They seem to have it all… until Will reveals he’s had an affair. To try and patch things up, the pair head off on the American road trip to end all road trips – or at least, that’s what Will thinks.
As the logline says, “for Liv, it’s a very different prospect – a landscape where accidents happen all the time. The perfect place to get revenge. Look what he made her do…”
But there may be a spanner in the works for Liv’s grand plans: while on their grand road trip, Liv and Will bump into Will’s colleague Cara (Ashley Benson) and her adoring boyfriend Garth (Eric Balfour). Soon, the couples’ lives will become intertwined forever… and given the premise of the show, we’re not expecting a cosy resolution at the end.
The show is set to premiere in the UK on September 15 and has been made by an all-female team: it’s based on a book written by B.E. Jones, created by Marie Dickens, directed by So Yong Kim and executive produced by Elizabeth Kilgarriff.
Speaking of revenge: Swift has also been busy in the past few years re-recording her entire back catalogue of works. When her contract expired with previous label Big Machine in 2018, the company retained ownership rights over the masters for all of her albums up until Reputation – essentially meaning that they owned the copyright for her songs.
Though she tried to buy the rights back, this was unsuccessful – and in 2020, Swift announced that she would re-record her entire back catalogue. Essentially, she’s covering her own songs – and owns the masters to these new versions. Ingenious.
