Lulu, 75, makes love life admission as she delves into whirlwind Maurice Gibb marriage: ‘I wanted the dream’

Lulu, 75, has opened up about sharing her love life with the public after bursting into the limelight when she was just a teenager.

The Shout! singer, who recently announced her retirement from music and touring, has been the subject of two high-profile marriages.

Lulu met first husband Maurice Gibb of Bee Gees fame in 1969 – marrying in the same year – but remarried in 1977 to John Frieda after divorcing Gibb in 1963.

Frieda and Lulu stayed married for 14 years before ending their marriage in 1991 – they share a son, Jordan.

Lulu is back on TV this weekend on ITV’s The Jonathan Ross Show and speaking with the presenter, touched upon experiencing a relationship in the public eye.

She began by reflecting on her decades-long career, telling Ross: “I’ve had a great career, I’m very lucky. If you’re going to be in a career this long, there is a price to pay and there’s ups but there’s downs as well.

“One of the very first beginnings of that was when I was just a teenager and I would be negotiating with men in suits running record labels. They would want me to sing little pop songs, I would have a lot of tears and a lot of struggles.

“When I met David (Bowie), David said, ‘The labels don’t get you. They don’t get your voice either. I’m going to make a hit record with you’.

“When he said that to me, I felt like I’d been heard and I’d been seen because it’s hard to negotiate with people who’ve been in the business for a long time.”

Ross then probed Lulu on her relationship with Bowie following comments made in her 2002 memoir about the late singer, to which she jokingly dodged the question and replied: “No comment.”

But after dodging the question, Lulu reflected on her memoir and said: “I have learnt so much, I’ve been up and down. I’m older and I think I wasn’t ready to be as vulnerable and to be as authentic and honest, not that I was a phoney.”

She delved further: “I was a young girl and I just want to be loved – that’s my story. That’s why I do what I do. I can say that now and I couldn’t have said that when I was younger. I want to be connected to people.”

Lulu continued to discuss her love life as she admitted she’s now “really happy” on her own.

“When I was young, I wanted a white picket fence and I wanted the dream. To be honest with you, now after having two marriages and I picked two good guys, I needed to get to know myself a bit more,” she admitted.

Lulu met Gibb behind the scenes of Top of the Pops in 1969 but their romance wasn’t to last, with the 75-year-old previously citing Gibb’s battle with alcoholism as a factor.

Speaking on her dedicated episode of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, Lulu said: “We thought we were king and queen of the world and were fabulous.

“The drinking was a part of it but we shouldn’t have got married in the first place… we should have just had a romance.

“I decided it had to end. He didn’t want it to end and it hurt him. I totally loved and adored him but… in love with him? I was probably in love with love.”
