In what is surely a sign of just how bad the New York Mets’ season has been, the team blew a recent game just a second after an announcer hoped they wouldn’t.
The Mets led the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 in the top of the ninth inning of Sunday’s game. With no outs and a man on second base, Mets pitcher Jake Diekman had second baseman Ketel Marte in a 2-2 count. Play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen noted how Mets have not had the best luck when leading that late in games this season.
“Mets have lost five game this year that they led after eight innings,” Cohen said. “That is an enormous number. Trying not to make it six.”
As soon as Cohen hoped the Mets wouldn’t do it again, Diekman threw a breaking ball down and in. Marte managed to get to it and send it over the wall for a go-ahead two-run homer.
“That’s driven to center field,” Cohen continued. “Back goes [Harrison Bader]. Going back near the ball… It’s outta here! Ketel Marte turns this game around with his second home run of the day — a two-run shot to center — and the Diamondbacks go in front 5-4.”
In the bottom of the ninth, the Mets were unable to score a run to at least tie the game, making Marte’s homer the game-winning play.
