Prepare to drop $22,000 off your paycheck if you want to stay working hybrid

By Kirstie McDermott

Despite the promises made by many tech companies during the pandemic, a lot of job seekers, (particularly those in the $100k and above earnings bracket), are finding that their dream of remote or hybrid work is diminishing as they seek new opportunities.

With 32% of Fortune 100 companies revoking their work-from-home (WFH) policies as far back as 2022, these include Starbucks, General Motors, Disney, Walmart, Dell and Amazon.

And now, a new report has found that during the first quarter of 2024––compared with the last quarter of 2023––in-person roles increased about 7%, to account for 89% of high-paying jobs.

The study also found that remote work availability dropped 33%, with just 9% of six-figure career opportunities offering it, and the percentage of high-paying roles in excess of $100,000 available on a hybrid basis fell by 40%.

The message is clear: if you want a new job this year, you’ll likely need to be prepared to give up some, if not all of your WFH privileges.

That is backed up by more recent data which found that U.S. companies are now offering on average $82,037 for in-person roles, compared to hybrid’s average of $59,992––a difference of more than $22,000.

Fully remote roles fare a bit better, paying $75,327 on average.

So, if you want a high-paying job you’ll likely have to bite the bullet and embrace the commute. But, if a flexible schedule and better work-life balance is what you really crave, then it could be time to accept that this may well come with a drop in salary.

If you’re ready to look for a new job, you can discover a range of roles all across the country across hybrid, remote or fully in-person on the BGR Job Board. It’s packed full of thousands of opportunities, like the three hybrid roles below.
