Prime Minister Anthony Albanese proposes to partner Jodie Haydon

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has proposed to his partner Jodie Haydon.

Albanese shared the news on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday morning with a selfie of the couple and the caption “she said yes”.

The couple met in 2020 at a business dinner in Melbourne where Albanese was speaking, a year after the 60-year-old had divorced from his wife Carmel Tebbutt.

He was married to Tebbutt for 19 years, and the two have a son together called Nathan.

In an interview with Spotlight in 2022, Albanese said the pair met at the ”right place, right time”.

The two bonded over their fierce support for NRL team the South Sydney Rabbitohs, and quickly became an item.

“She’s not a political candidate, and I am. I’m conscious of that,” Albanese said.

“But in this life, which can be really difficult … you do need that personal support. I have Jodie and I have Nathan, my son, and, of course, the first dog Toto.”

Before the two met Haydon, who works as a financial adviser, said she had hoped he would be the man she had seen in newspapers and television.

“And he is,” she said.

“For me, Anthony’s what you see is what you get.”

She said behind closed doors Albanese was a “respectful partner” who was “kind and thoughtful”.

“I love him and I love him deeply,” Haydon said.

The 45-year-old accompanied Albanese to France in 2022 where she met then French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte in Paris.

“It was a really wonderful experience to meet them,” Haydon said.

“They were so warm and friendly and engaging and put us almost at ease, or certainly myself, as soon as we met them.

“From the moment I met (Brigitte), she was so warm and friendly and took my hands … I just felt comfortable with her.”

Fellow politicians shared their excitement at the news on social media, including Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

“Love is a beautiful thing. I’m so happy for you both!,” she wrote.

Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister and Gellibrand MP Tim Watts also congratulated the couple.

“Amazing news,” he wrote.
