(NewsNation) — A Massachusetts high school girls basketball team reportedly had to forfeit a game after a transgender player on the opposing team allegedly injured three players.
Retired women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell joined NewsNation’s “On Balance” to discuss the controversy:
“Having to play against transgenders is not fair, and it’s not equal” she said Tuesday. “It’s not a level playing field. Females should not get to play against transgenders.”
According to The Daily Mail, The Collegiate Charter School of Lowell Girls’ Basketball team dropped out of a February game against KIPP Massachusetts. They forfeited after one of KIPP’s players, who is a biological male, injured three of their players.
School officials said the team decided to forfeit because other players were afraid of getting injured ahead of upcoming playoff games.
Video from the game, obtained from NewsNation, shows the transgender player taking the ball from a player, causing her to fall to the ground.
According to a Washington Post-University of Maryland poll, most Americans are opposed to transgender female athletes competing in women’s sports at the professional, collegiate and high school levels,
NewsNation reached out to KIPP Academy for comment but has yet to hear back.
