The Fosters star Maia Mitchell has revealed why she traded the glitz and glam of Hollywood for a slow farm lifestyle in Australia – and why Los Angeles was not the place for her.
The 30-year-old Aussie actress took her talents to California at the age of 18. It was in the Golden State that Maia became a household name after nabbing star roles in hit shows like The Fosters and Good Trouble.
However, more than a decade later, Maia decided to go back to her roots in a bid to be closer to her family after the COVID-19 pandemic made her fearful she wouldn’t be able to get to her loved ones if they got sick.
Maia got candid about her reasons for relocating to her native country while speaking to Zach Sang on the Zach Sang Show as she lifted the lid on the moment she knew she needed to leave California and her new life for back home.

When asked why she moved back to Byron Bay, Australia, Maia explained: ‘I just wanted to be home. I think COVID was just really hard for everyone in different ways, it was hard being so far from everyone.
‘If anything happened, I couldn’t get there.’
She noted that the thought of moving back home had been on her mind ‘for a while’ even before the pandemic hit and she floated the idea with producers of The Fosters.
The actress also said that while she appreciated her time in California, she knew it wasn’t for her.
‘LA isn’t for me. It’s not my favorite city. I love coming to visit but I’m a small town girl. I’m a country girl. I just wanted to be home and be close to family,’ she added.
The actress joked that although she had to dodge a few ‘ground snakes,’ it was ‘fine.’
She added that she had never even planned to move to America, but her role on The Fosters was ‘such a dream job’ that she just stayed.
Maia then lifted the lid on her relaxing lifestyle in Australia.

‘I live on farm, I’m on a 20-acre farm, and I just hang out there by myself. It couldn’t be more opposite to my life [in LA], which is fantastic,’ she said.
The 30-year-old added that although she has been running around Europe filming her latest project the last few months, when she is at her farm, she does ‘nothing.’
Maia’s The Fosters costar Cierra Ramirez was also present and said that although she had yet to visit her pal in Australia, she was hoping to this year.
Maia rose to stardom in 2013 when she starred in Disney Channel’s Teen Beach Movie.
From there she took her talents to the States and garnered major roles outside of the Disney Channel.
In March 2022, Maia told her fans that she would be moving on from The Fosters to return home to be closer to her ‘nearest and dearest.’
Maia is now starring in The Artful Dodger alongside actor Thomas Brodie-Sangster.
