The hustle to fill floral orders ahead of Valentine's Day

KIRKWOOD, Mo. – As we inch closer to the busiest day of the year at Kirkwood Florists, they are rushing to put together arrangements for the big day. Jon Kuhlmann, owner of Kirkwood Florist, says you’ll want to place your order by Tuesday because many florists may have hit capacity by Wednesday.

According to Kuhlmann, they’ll deliver 400 floral arrangements on Wednesday.

Valentine’s Day is their biggest day of the year, Kuhlmann says, followed by Mother’s Day. Kuhlmann expects they’ll put together about a thousand bouquets. On a normal day, he has two drivers but he’ll have 10 drivers on Wednesday.

Kuhlmann says while his shop is very busy, it can be an adrenaline rush getting everything ready. He says while customers spend about $125 on average, he has something for any budget.

“When you’re dealing with that many orders, you’ve just got to make sure they all get done right and everyone’s feeling it,” he said. “Red roses are always the best seller. A dozen, two dozen. Calla lilies and red roses are a popular item as well. We can do just a lovely assortment of spring flowers or even Valentine-themed—red, white, and pink.”

If you receive flowers this year, you’ll want them to stay as fresh as possible for as long as possible. Kuhlmann says they should last seven to 10 days. To get the most life out of them, change the water daily to keep the water free from bacteria.
