Grayson Murray, the PGA Tour golfer who tragically died on Saturday at the age of 30, died by suicide — his parents revealed.
In a statement shared by the PGA Tour Sunday, Eric and Terry Murray, Grayson’s parents, revealed their son’s cause of death.
“We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support,” Eric and Terry Murray said. “Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”
“We have spent the past 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” the Murrays added. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare. We have so many questions that have no answers.”
Prior to his death, Murray — a two-time PGA Tour winner — spoke candidly about his struggles with depression and alcohol abuse. After winning the Sony Open in January, Murray said, “I would not be in this position right now, today, if I didn’t put that drink down eight months ago.”
Murray was engaged to be married to his longtime girlfriend, Christiana Ritchie.
