Your 2023-2024 Kia Telluride Might Need A Software Update For…The Door Handles

Most modern vehicles are definitely tech-laden, but who even knew that a door handle could get a software update?

If you needed a reminder of just how technology-driven modern vehicles have become, Kia has recently issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) mandating owners to bring their Telluride in for a software update on the SUV’s… door handle.

Thankfully, the TSB aims to address a moderately annoying issue rather than something hazardous or affecting the fundamental usability of the vehicle. According to the repair document, some 2023 to 2024 Tellurides may experience an inoperative “capacitive touch” function for unlocking the door.

This means that owners approaching the vehicle won’t be able to unlock the door simply by touching the handle. Instead, they will need to reach into their pocket or purse and press the “unlock” button. While it’s no great burden, but you’d rather have it than not, I suppose.

In order to have this repair completed, owners of the affected Telluride SUVs will actually have to take their cars to a dealer. There, a technician will fully remove the door handle, disconnect it, and plug it into a specialized tool that updates parts such as these.

Fortunately, as mentioned by a technician who shared details about the process on the r/Justrolledintotheshop subreddit, the door handles on the Telluride “are extremely easy to remove,” making this a relatively straightforward task.

According to owner testimonials found by Tire Meets Road, the process still takes some time. One owner said that they were at their dealer for around two hours, but they noted that the door handles worked better after the work had been completed.

If you own a 2023-2024 Telluride and feel that the door handle is underperforming, it’s advisable to address this promptly. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, Kia is not obligated to proactively reach out to customers. They are only required to complete this repair free of charge while the vehicle is under warranty.
