The dramatic event started when Kattola suddenly felt ill and collapsed in the gym during a regular student-teacher basketball game. “Medically, I was gone,” Kattola said, recalling the horrifying incident, to Fox 2 Detroit.
Juniors at Oak Park High, Isreal DuBose and Correy Coleman, moved quickly to take action. Relying on their first aid and CPR training from a health sciences class just a few months before, the pair started performing life-saving procedures.
“We thought we might use it at some point in our lives, but not that soon,” Coleman said.
“We have seats in the bleachers.DuBose said, “I just knew I had to do something.” “I began compressions and around two and a half rounds of compressions, the AED was brought and Correy placed the AED pads.”
Their prompt and resolute measures were crucial in preserving their teacher’s life.
Quickly after their arrival, paramedics transported Kattola to a nearby hospital where she received more care. By some miracle, he was back at school the next week because his classmates had intervened in time.
Kattola went back to the girls to express his gratitude for saving his life. “I do not have too much to say other than I love you guys,” he said. “What more can a teacher say?”
