Dunwoody High School artists showcase their talents in Storefront Art exhibit

Fifteen Dunwoody High School artists were recognized for their artistic prowess last week at the school. Their works will be displayed this summer in the windows of Dunwoody Village merchants (Photo supplied by the City of Dunwoody).

The artwork of 15 Dunwoody High School students was chosen for the city’s Storefront Art exhibit and will be displayed in windows of businesses in the Dunwoody Village area.

At a ceremony held last week at DHS, school principal Tom Bass, joined by Mayor Lynn Deutsch, recognized the students and gave them each a check for $200 for their materials and work.

The students whose artwork was chosen include Bobbi Allen, Brinkley Parrish, Clara Green, Elder Coria, Eli Cronin, Elizabeth Buckareff, Hannah Hazen, Harrison Flynt, Jenna McJunkin, Jeston Huang, Lilah Paradice, Lydia Bizzell, Magadhi Sathyanarayanan, Mira Walter, and Nia Elekwachi.

Bass also recognized three of the school’s visual arts teachers, Catherine Preston, Amy Goertemiller, and Claire Zimmerman, who provided leadership and worked with the students on their submissions.

The 2024 Storefront Art exhibit is a Dunwoody Economic Development program that receives support from the Dunwoody Art Commission and Create Dunwoody. Dunwoody Village business owners and managers ranked their preferred artwork, and the 15 pieces with the highest points were chosen for the exhibit.

“The Storefront Art Exhibit ties together three priorities: supporting small businesses, partnering with our schools, and embracing public art,” said Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch in a statement released by the city. “I am so pleased that we are continuing this project, and I can’t wait to share these students’ works with the community.”

The chosen artwork featured abstracts, pet portraits, nature scenes, and even a portrait of Dunwoody’s iconic farmhouse.  More than 80 works were submitted for consideration.

“It’s a great day to be a Dunwoody Wildcat because of these amazing people here,” said DHS Principal Tom Bass. “We can’t wait to see your artwork in the Village this summer.”

These pieces of art tell a story – our artists’ stories and our city’s story,” Deutsch said. “They will be a fabulous addition to our public arts’ program.”

Several designs from the 2022 and 2023 Storefront Art exhibits are now on display as part of Dunwoody’s Green Light Art project, which features original canvases that were digitized, printed, and wrapped onto traffic light boxes across the city, the release said.

In addition, 13 paintings from last year’s exhibit are currently featured along a new art wall inside Perimeter Mall at the entrance between Maggiano’s and Macy’s.

Participating Dunwoody Village businesses where the art is to appear include Big Frog Custom T-Shirts, Enchanted Forest, Royal Spice, CrossFit Dunwoody, The Whole Tooth, Chupito’s, The Music Class, Budi’s Sushi, Dunwoody Prep, Functionize, Christine Scott Dentistry, Village Orthodontics, Karate Atlanta, Dunwoody Ace Hardware, and Alloy Personal Training.
