Johnny Williams hoping to be included in Warren Gatland’s 33-man Wales World Cup squad to crown remarkable turnaround… after being diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2019

Warren Gatland will name his 33-man Wales squad for the World Cup this morning and Johnny Williams hopes the announcement will crown a remarkable turnaround.

In 2019 the centre was diagnosed with testicular cancer, making a swift recovery after chemotherapy.

‘Four years ago, I was watching the World Cup from a hospital bed,’ said Williams. ‘So the ability to maybe be playing at the tournament four years later is hard to sum up.

‘Every working day has been towards playing for Wales and going to the World Cup ever since I can remember from the age of six-years-old when my dad was bringing me to the stadium to watch Wales.

‘It would be hard to sum up, considering where I was four years ago. I have dreamt about one day going to a World Cup.

‘My dad took me to Cardiff to watch the internationals. I just remember that I really wanted to be on the pitch and to play for Wales. Hopefully, it will all be topped off on Monday with selection for the World Cup.’

Gatland’s selection was made easier after he watched a rookie Wales side hammered 52-16 by 2019 champions South Africa in Cardiff.

Centre Williams was one of just a few players to impress, even though he did see a pass intercepted for one opposition try.

Flanker Jac Morgan is expected to be named his country’s World Cup captain at the age of just 23.
