Stellantis Open To Selling Future BEVs With Combustion Engines

  • Stellantis plans to have 75 battery-electric nameplates in its range by 2030.
  • The firm’s flexible platforms allow it to shift strategy to better suit the needs of its customers.
  • Stellantis currently sells the three best-selling plug-in hybrids in the U.S.

Stellantis has revealed it can offer its future battery-electric vehicles with combustion engines if this is what consumers want. This could start with the upcoming Jeep Wagoneer S.

Like other car companies, Stellantis isn’t blind to the fact that the transition to electric vehicles won’t be as smooth as many had thought. Speaking at an event focused on the brand’s first-quarter delivery and financial figures, chief financial officer Natalie Knight said the Wagoneer S will be first offered as a BEV but a hybrid or gas-only version could follow if there’s demand for it.

“The majority of our products are either ICE vehicles or intended to utilize those multi-energy platforms that we have,” she said. “This is a great opportunity for us, compared to our peers, having the multi-energy platforms for all of our products in development and having the agility to move between them.”

According to Knight, Stellantis wants to cater to consumer demands while also sending a message to the market about its electrification strategy. Of the 25 new vehicles the company will launch this year, 18 will initially be sold as BEVs. Stellantis plans to have 75 battery-electric vehicle nameplates by 2030 and to be selling 5 million BEVs annually by the same date.

“Our goal is to put ourselves in the position where, on the one hand, we can show the market that we know where things are moving and we’re committed very much to the EV market but, on the other hand, we have the flexibility to go and grow where the consumer demand is,” Knight said. “We want to stay close to the consumer, and if we see there’s an opportunity with those models that we introduced as a BEV first, we’ll look at that,” she added, per WardsAuto.

The brand’s flexibility is already paying dividends. In the first quarter of 2024, the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Dodge Hornet were the three best-selling plug-in hybrids in the country.
