More than 100 paintings, prints, maps, and decorative objects created by Dutch artists during the 17th and early 18th century have landed at the High Museum of Art.

“Dutch Art in a Global Age: Masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston” includes works by some of the period’s leading Dutch artists such as Rembrandt, Jacob van Ruisdael, Frans Hals, Jan Steen, Willem Kalf and Rachel Ruysch. This exhibit provides a window into this important period in European art.

On loan from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the works in this exhibition provide essential context to understand the preeminence of Dutch arts during the height of maritime trade, a rise in globalism, and the cultural flowering that followed.

As Dutch society expanded with new influences from abroad, artists addressed the complexities of their experiences. From the positive self-image that the Dutch people wished to portray to the dark side of colonialism, the transatlantic slave trade, and urban poverty, the works in this immaculate collection offer important insight into the time.

Organized into six sections, the exhibition includes still life paintings, landscapes and seascapes, as well as depictions of prosperity, urban growth, the influx of immigrant groups, and consumerism.

“We are fortunate to be able to present this extraordinary collection of Dutch masterpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries; they are superlative works by the period’s greatest artists and designers,” said Claudia Einecke, the High’s France B. Bunzi Family curator of European Art in a statement.

“However, even more exciting is how their images and objects gain fresh interest and new significance in this exhibition by being seen through the lens of globalism and interpreted in terms of the economic, political, and cultural realities that shaped art and society at the time.”

The “Dutch Art in a Global Age: Masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston” exhibition is installed in the Cousins Special Exhibition Galleries located on the second level of the Wieland Pavilion, and will remain on view through July 14, 2024.
